Motion Capture

Hi (potential) readers:

regret the delay in writing, but things have been to the top with this in school, work, cienciayvideojuegos, and everything else, but I have not forgotten this corner where knowledge leisure and entertainment converge. On this occasion I'm going to talk about motion capture systems, or Motion Capture short MoCap.

MoCap the systems allow to a computer to receive a series of data from an external system, which, in general, reflect the movement of a body in the real world .

MoCap systems have been used in different areas within computer science, from medicine, detecting deviations from the natural movement of a human being and thus diagnose any conditions, to the world of film and video games , allowing you to capture real human expressions and applying these movements to a 3D or animated character in a videogame .

traditional MoCap the systems developed from the concept of visual landmarks. The marks are visual images or easy to identify patterns within a complex image. The process is performed to obtain visual markings known as segmented , and consists of algorithms for image processing based on manipulation contrasts, edge detection (edges), threshold lighting, among others. The visual markers are placed in defined positions on a scuba-type suit (see picture).

are arranged a series of cameras that capture the movement of the user, then apply segmentation and finally obtain the displacement of visual marks, as shown in the video below .

There are other methods to capture the position and movement of the user, one of them is based on the capture of this information through the use of accelerometers and gyroscopes.

The video above shows this type of MoCap system built from acceleration sensors and gyroscopes, these suits do not need an imaging system unlike the previous system. The tricky part in this type of suit is the actual position obtained from the acceleration and this requires numerical integrators, which carry a numerical error of the integrator itself, pushing the numerical results of the actual values. To avoid such errors exist filters and other algorithms.

Finally I comment that the information captured by these suits can be used online as seen in the first video, or stored for later apply for a 3D model or animation in a video game software, among many others. One of the main formats in which data is stored with extension *. BVH files, as can be seen in the following pages:

Well I hope that's all he has been pleased, and here we are back. Bye.
